Presenting . . . Masks 🎭
Thank you to everyone who participated in this month’s collage! A reminder: If there are themes you’d be excited to collage, please submit your prompts here. And now, here are the truly stunning results for Masks:
Untitled by Hannah Seo
“I’m Not Everything I Want To Be” is the title of a documentary I watched this past month about a Czech photographer, which was composed entirely of still photographs and voiceover. It was a thought-provoking film, and the category of “masks” makes me think of one of its central motifs: the impossibility of clearly seeing ourselves and each other, obscured through camera lenses or deception, and what it takes to know yourself.
“American Totemic Mask Collage” by Meg Woods
I started off with the idea of making a mask similar to the one in the Jim Carrey movie *The Mask*—green but with detailed facial features. Then I added hair and wound up with these.
“Masks for the Masques” by Katie O.
“The Sphinx” by Eleanor Cummins
I don’t know what happened here, but I like it. I started with this beautiful close up on Thierry Mugler’s metal bodysuit from the 1995-96 collection, which Mugler described as armor for women. Then the sphinx figure merged with the television. I have had these words clipped for over a year, waiting for the right moment. Plus little paper tickets gifted by Hannah and a Freud Museum postcard from another friend completed the composition.
And that’s it for our July Mask collages! Thank you for everyone who submitted.
Next up is our August theme, Stained Glass! You still have two weeks (okay, let’s be real, a whole month) to submit — please remember to share your creations with us via email at a.hannah.seo@gmail.com. Be sure to include a photo of your artwork, a title, and (optional) a short description of the piece and/or your process.
We’ll see you on August 31st (!!) for a special edition, and then September 1st with a whole new prompt and a showcase of Stained Glass collages on September 15. Until then!
